The upcoming Nuapada Bypoll has emerged as one of Odisha’s most closely watched political contests. It is marked by high-voltage drama of joining and quitting across parties. The spotlight now firmly rests on Jay Dholkia’s entry into the ruling BJP. As a result, this move has stirred political debate, not only in Nuapada but also across the state, highlighting the growing attention of political observers.

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Jay Dholkia, son of late Rajendra Dholkia, a well-known BJD leader from Western Odisha, inherits a strong legacy. The people of Nuapada respected the senior Dholkia for his social work among farmers, tribal communities, and migrant labourers. This helped him build a deep emotional connection with them. Furthermore, following in his father’s footsteps, Jay Dholkia has been actively engaging with grassroots issues. Consequently, he has gained significant public goodwill in the region, while also strengthening his connection with local communities.

The BJP’s decision to induct Jay Dholkia is being viewed as a strategic masterstroke. The party was in search of a candidate capable of bridging the gap between rural, urban, and youth voters. With Jay Dholkia’s image combining sympathy, legacy, and youthful energy, BJP aims to counter both BJD and Congress effectively in Nuapada. The move reflects a calculated effort to reshape the political equation of the district.

Nuapada, a tribal-dominated region, holds around 35% tribal population. Nearly 30% of people depend on agriculture, 20% work as migrant labourers, and 15% belong to the middle class and small business community. The Dholkia family’s strong emotional and social ties with these groups are likely to strengthen the BJP’s grassroots network. This connection could convert the goodwill into votes.

For decades, migration has remained a major concern in Nuapada. Thousands of families work as labourers and brick kiln workers in neighbouring states. Late Rajendra Dholkia had raised these issues in the Assembly. Now, Jay Dholkia’s proactive image is likely to enable the BJP to implement long-term solutions through central and state flagship schemes.

As a young and dynamic leader, Jay Dholkia is likely to appeal to first-time voters and the youth seeking change. They desire fresh leadership. Consequently, his induction has caught the attention of both the state and central BJP leadership, thereby signaling his growing influence.

Political experts believe that Jay Dholkia’s entry into BJP could prove to be a decisive factor in altering the Nuapada Bypoll equation, giving the saffron party a new edge in Western Odisha politics.
