Bhubaneswar, Odisha: The National Conference on Handlooms & Handicrafts, organized by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, began today at Hotel Taj Vivanta, Bhubaneswar with enthusiasm and cultural pride. The two-day event celebrates India’s rich weaving heritage. It aims to promote innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth in the craft sector.
At the inaugural session, Odisha Chief Secretary Sri Manoj Ahuja highlighted India’s textile legacy and urged continued innovation and inclusion. “Our handlooms are not just threads they’re stories of our culture and creativity,” he said, inspiring artisans to blend tradition with modernity.
Moreover, Smt. Veena Kumari Meena, DC (Handlooms), and Ms. Amrit Raj, DC (Handicrafts), emphasized India’s mission to empower craft communities. They also stressed the importance of strengthening artisan livelihoods. They described handlooms and handicrafts as symbols of sustainability and pride admired worldwide.
In addition, Smt. Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department, Odisha, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to merging tradition with technology. She noted that Odisha’s weavers are cultural ambassadors. These individuals deserve better opportunities and recognition.
Meanwhile, thematic sessions showcased best practices from several states. They focused on market access, cluster development, training, welfare, and infrastructure. The first session, “Market Connect: Expanding Reach, Building Brands,” featured experts from Assam, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. They highlighted how innovation has improved market visibility for artisans.
Furthermore, upcoming discussions will feature Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, and Himachal Pradesh, sharing models for skill training and artisan welfare. The event will conclude with an Open House Discussion. This will foster collaboration among policy makers, artisans, and experts. It aims to design a stronger future for India’s vibrant handloom and handicraft ecosystem.
