Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is keeping a close watch on the unfolding situation in neighbouring Nepal, even from her office at the Uttar Kanya State Secretariat in Siliguri, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) said on Wednesday.
“The situation in our neighbouring country, Nepal, is a matter of deep concern. Placing the interests of the state above all else, our compassionate Chief Minister, Smt. @MamataOfficial, stayed at Uttar Kanya State Secretariat through Tuesday night, personally monitoring developments with utmost vigilance,” the TMC stated.
Banerjee refrained from commenting to media on the situation while in North Bengal. “I love my neighbouring country of Nepal. But I cannot comment on the current situation right now. I can only speak if the Indian government issues a statement on it,” she said.
The Chief Minister noted that during last year’s political crisis in Bangladesh, she also refrained from commenting unless the Union government spoke on the issue. “So far, the Union government has not issued any statement regarding Nepal,” she added.
India has advised its citizens to defer travel plans to Nepal until stability returns, following widespread protests that led to the death of 19 people and the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.
The Darjeeling District Police has opened a 24-hour control room to assist stranded Indians. Meanwhile, the Nepali Army has taken charge of maintaining law and order, imposing a nationwide curfew effective until Thursday morning.
The Army warned that any acts of vandalism, looting, arson, or attacks on individuals or property carried out under the pretext of demonstrations will be treated as criminal offences, with strict action to follow.
Mamata Banerjee’s proactive monitoring underscores her commitment to staying informed on regional developments and ensuring the welfare of Indian citizens affected by the ongoing crisis in Nepal.
