A 21-year-old final-year nursing student, Ankita Biswas, from MV-13 village in Malkangiri, tragically died by suicide at her home.
Her family alleges that persistent emotional distress caused by a youth named Sujay from MV-60 village led to her death.
Ankita had reportedly endured repeated calls and promises of marriage from Sujay, which her father, Brindaban Biswas, claims were deceptive and manipulative.
Two days before her death, Ankita was hospitalised after allegedly being force-fed poisoned biscuits by Sujay during a confrontation. Though she was discharged after treatment, she confided in her father that Sujay planned to visit the next morning. Tragically, Ankita was found hanging that very day.
Brindaban has demanded strict legal action, including capital punishment, accusing Sujay of emotional exploitation. He claims to have warned authorities earlier, citing Ankita’s suicidal thoughts, but says his concerns were dismissed.
Police have launched an investigation. Malkangiri Model Police Station IIC Regan Kindo stated that the two were in a relationship, and Sujay had promised marriage after five years. Ankita, however, wanted to marry sooner. The case now includes allegations of harassment and poisoning.
This incident underscores the urgent need for mental health awareness, emotional support systems, and stronger safeguards for young women navigating complex relationships.
