Kolkata : The historic Kiddepore Odia School, established in 1946 as an evening school for the children of Odia dock workers, continues to uphold the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Odisha.

Back in the post-independence years, Odia families working at Kolkata docks were deeply concerned that their children might grow up adopting Bengali as their first language and eventually forget Odia. To safeguard their mother tongue, they established this unique institution where, despite following the Bengali Board syllabus, students appear for examinations in Odia.

Over the decades, the school became a cultural anchor for Prabasi Odias (migrant Odias) living in Kolkata, who wished to ensure their children remained connected to their roots. While the present generation of Odias increasingly prefers English-medium institutions, Kiddepore Odia School still serves as a beacon for those determined to keep their native language alive.

Today, the school celebrated Ganesh Puja with traditional fervor. The festivities not only brought students and teachers together but also evoked a nostalgic bond with Utkal Janma Bhumi (Mother Odisha).

Though student enrollment has declined over the years, the school remains a proud reminder of the community’s struggle and commitment to safeguarding their linguistic heritage in a city far from home.
