Kathmandu : Hundreds of Indian and foreign tourists remain stranded in Nepal after Kathmandu Airport shut down due to violent Gen Z-led protests against alleged government corruption and a social media ban.
What began as a peaceful youth-led movement escalated into clashes with security forces, leaving at least 22 people dead and several top politicians assaulted. Demonstrators also set fire to leaders’ homes, intensifying the unrest.
The airport closure, combined with blockades on major highways, has left tourists trapped, many of whom arrived for vacations unaware of the ongoing protests.
A group of friends from Navi Mumbai, visiting the Pashupatinath Temple, recounted their ordeal. “We arrived on September 8, but the next day, the protests began. We cannot return home because airports are closed. The Embassy advised us to stay in our hotel until safe arrangements are made,” one of them told IANS.
Another tourist added, “We are extremely scared. Our families back home are worried too. We hope for a safe exit soon.”
The Indian Embassy has assured stranded tourists that efforts are underway to facilitate their safe return, and they have been asked to remain in their hotels until further notice.
The unrest has also affected foreign visitors. A German tourist in Kathmandu described the situation as “very bad… I saw smoke from burning hotels and people dying. It is very sad. We hope normalcy returns soon.” Another German visitor, part of a 14-member group, expressed hope for an early departure.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, but the volatile environment has left tourists facing uncertainty. Officials are coordinating with the Embassy and local agencies to ensure safe evacuation as soon as possible.
With violence and disruptions ongoing, both Indian and international travelers remain confined, highlighting the challenges faced by tourists amid the political turmoil in Nepal.
