New Delhi: During a heated debate in the Rajya Sabha over the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the military response termed ‘Operation Sindoor’, veteran actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan raised strong objections to the naming of the operation.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Jaya questioned the rationale behind naming the operation after Sindoor, a traditional symbol of marital sanctity and hope.
“When the sindoor itself was wiped away from the foreheads of so many women, why name a military operation ‘Sindoor’? Who gave this name?” she asked emotionally.
She paid tribute to the victims and condemned the barbaric terrorist act that claimed 26 lives, questioning how such a large-scale tragedy could occur if terrorism in Kashmir was truly under control.
“After Article 370 was revoked, people believed Kashmir was free from terror. Many visited with trust and pride, believing it to be a paradise again. But what did they get in return? The government has broken the trust of its people,” she said.
Jaya went further, demanding accountability and an apology from the government:
“Has the government apologized to those families? It’s not just about buying guns and ammunition. What’s the use of all this firepower if we cannot save our citizens?”
She criticized the Defence Ministry for focusing on military purchases while failing to prevent loss of life, urging the House to prioritize humanity over hardware.
Calling for humility and compassion in governance, she appealed to her fellow lawmakers:
“Please be humble. Think of the people who trusted you enough to send you here. Respect the responsibility you’ve been given.”
