Indore: A sudden Indore building mishap at a commercial structure in the bustling Vijay Nagar area of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore injured 14 people on Monday evening. The accident prompted a swift emergency response and raised urgent questions about urban safety compliance.
Indore Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar said that officers initially found 10 individuals stranded inside the building and evacuated them safely to a nearby hospital.
“Rescue teams continue operations as two more people remain trapped,” he added.
The mishap occurred during routine operations when a section of the multi-storey building collapsed, triggering panic among occupants and passersby. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud cracking sound, followed by a cloud of dust and debris.
“It was terrifying. People were screaming and running for safety. Some were trapped under rubble,” said Ramesh Patel, a local shopkeeper.
Emergency teams from the Indore Municipal Corporation, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police arrived within minutes.
Rescuers worked late into the night, using sniffer dogs and thermal imaging equipment to locate survivors. Initial reports show that three people sustained serious injuries, while 11 others suffered minor to moderate wounds. Medical staff rushed all victims to MY Hospital, where three remain under ICU observation.
As of Monday night, officials confirmed that all injured were stable. Preliminary investigations suggest unauthorised structural modifications or poor maintenance may have caused the collapse.
Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and Indore Development Authority (IDA) began a detailed structural audit of the building and nearby properties.
“A full inquiry has been ordered, and authorities will take action against those responsible,” said Indore Collector Ashish Singh.
Authorities have sealed the building and evacuated adjacent structures as a precaution. The incident reignited debate over enforcing building codes in rapidly expanding urban centres like Indore. Civic groups and residents urge stricter oversight and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies. City officials also asked citizens to report any signs of structural instability to local authorities.
