Port of Spain, Sep 9 : Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to healthcare assistance in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), the Indian High Commission in Port of Spain announced a 50-day Artificial Limb Fitment Camp scheduled from October to November. The camp will provide free artificial limbs to 800 beneficiaries.
The Government of India fully funds the camp, which NGO Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS), popularly known as Jaipur Foot, will organise in collaboration with the Indian mission. PM Modi announced the initiative during his visit to T&T in July.
The High Commission said that New Delhi continues to lead in providing developmental assistance to the Caribbean nation. “The Office of the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago patronises the Limb Camp, and the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) actively collaborates. A 10-member BMVSS team will work in T&T to ensure smooth execution,” it added.
BMVSS, established in 1975, ranks as the world’s largest organisation rehabilitating persons with lower limb disability. According to the Indian mission, the NGO has rehabilitated over 2.4 million people in India and 46 developing countries.
Under the “India for Humanity” program launched in 2018, the Government of India and BMVSS organised Jaipur Foot camps in 25 countries, providing free artificial limbs to over 17,000 beneficiaries. These initiatives have actively supported the physical and socio-economic rehabilitation of persons with disabilities worldwide.
The Indian High Commission expressed confidence that the upcoming Limb Camp in T&T will positively impact the lives of beneficiaries and their families, demonstrating India’s commitment to international healthcare and humanitarian support.
