New Delhi: India is now at the forefront of global Artificial Intelligence (AI) growth, combining fast innovation with responsible rules. As the Lead Chair of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), India hosted the Global India AI Summit in Delhi in July 2024. It focused on computing power, data, app development, startup funding, and safe AI adoption, showcasing India’s AI leadership.

Looking ahead, India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2025. The event will emphasize using AI to solve real-world problems in health, education, agriculture, climate, and governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has actively promoted AI. He recognizes its power to transform lives and boost India’s role as a digital leader, strengthening its leadership in AI.

At the same time, India is taking steps to stop AI misuse on social media. This includes deepfakes, fake voices, and manipulated images. On October 21, the government updated the IT Rules 2021 and invited public feedback. Under the new rules, AI content must carry watermarks or ID tags. Also, audio content must display identifiers for the first 10% of playback, demonstrating India’s proactive approach to AI governance.

Furthermore, platforms must declare AI content, and users cannot remove these tags. These rules apply only to public content, not private messages. Such measures reflect India’s leadership in AI regulation.

In addition, the government tightened rules for apps using mobile numbers, including WhatsApp, payment apps, and delivery platforms. The Telecom Cyber Security Rules now include a mobile number verification system to prevent fraud and cybercrime, again underlining its AI leadership globally.

Overall, these measures protect users, track AI content, ensure accountability, and still encourage innovation. Social media platforms that remove fake content properly retain legal protection. Additionally, content removal powers are now limited to senior officials for fair decisions, reinforcing India’s AI leadership initiatives.

Thus, India balances innovation with safety. It learns from the EU and China while maintaining ethical standards, privacy, and freedom. With these initiatives, India not only boosts its economy but also sets a global example for responsible AI use. Thus, it emerges as a true leader in Artificial Intelligence, exemplifying its AI leadership on the world stage.
