A sudden heavy rain in Kolkata turned the city into a scene of chaos, causing widespread waterlogging and disrupting transport. Streets flooded, homes were affected, and several Durga Puja pandals suffered damage. Residents struggled to move through knee-deep water, while authorities deployed emergency teams to manage the situation and ensure safety.

Kolkata : A sudden heavy rain in Kolkata turned the city into a scene of chaos, leaving streets waterlogged and disrupting transport and communication systems. The torrential downpour began around 1:30 pm following a massive cloudburst and continued for nearly five hours, affecting commuters and residents across the city. Office-goers faced the brunt of the disruption as trains, metro services, and cabs became unavailable.

Water from clogged drains entered the ground floors of many houses, particularly in low-lying areas, causing streets and homes to flood. Many neighborhoods experienced knee-deep water, making movement extremely difficult for residents. Tragically, seven people suffered electrocution after water seeped into open electric fuse boxes, highlighting the dangers of such extreme weather. Authorities urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid waterlogged streets.

Heavy Rain in Kolkata Causes Flooding and Transport Disruption

The heavy rain in Kolkata brought daily transport to a near halt. Trains, metro services, and cabs were unavailable, leaving office-goers stranded. Traffic police and emergency services worked tirelessly to manage the situation, but long delays and congestion persisted throughout the afternoon. Commuters had to navigate flooded streets on foot, further intensifying the city’s challenges during peak hours.

With Dwitiya underway and the Durga Puja celebrations in full swing, this heavy rainfall has dampened the festive spirits of the people. The festival, eagerly awaited by every Bengali each year, is just five days away. Many pandals, either completed or nearing completion, have suffered significant damage due to the inclement weather. In several areas, bamboo poles supporting advertisement hoardings have collapsed, and the beautifully crafted idols have sustained considerable damage from the relentless rain.

Authorities have deployed teams to pump out water, clear blocked drains, and restore essential services. Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible and avoid venturing into flooded areas. Despite the challenges, Kolkata’s citizens are showing resilience, working together to overcome the disruptions caused by the heavy rain in Kolkata while preparing for the upcoming festive season.
