Kolkata, like in the past, has stressed using Green Crackers for a Green Diwali. CSIR-NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) developed green crackers, which produce 30 percent less pollution than conventional firecrackers. They contain reduced amounts of chemicals like barium and aluminum and include additives that suppress dust and smoke.

CSIR-NEERI developed green firecrackers with a reduced shell size, using fewer raw materials, and made them without ash. Additionally, the additives act as dust suppressants to reduce emissions, including particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
Strict Green Diwali Rules and Popular Bazi Bazars in Kolkata
Unlike other places, where vendors randomly sell firecrackers on street corners without proper fire safety, Kolkata Police strictly regulates cracker sales to ensure a Green Diwali experience.

Open-field Bazi or Firecracker markets sell only GREEN CRACKERS and follow proper fire safety measures. These ‘bazi bazars’ are popular among citizens aware of the evils of SOUND AND ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION, though some people still buy non-green crackers from street vendors despite the efforts for a Green Diwali.

Some people still prioritize sound over pollution, which goes against the Green Diwali initiative.
Celebrate a Safe and Green Diwali: Enforcement and Awareness
Kolkata Police reminded citizens that they will take stern action against anyone who bursts crackers exceeding the decibel limits. Authorities will arrest offenders and impose heavy fines on those who break the law.
Police and the Fire Brigade will remain on high alert during these coming days, as flying lanterns cause most fires in Kolkata.
Let’s go green and help Mother Nature and ourselves live a better life.
