Theni, Tamil Nadu: The northeast monsoon has dealt a heavy blow to grape farmers in Theni, who are grappling with widespread crop damage and a steep fall in market prices. The continuous rains and cold conditions across the Cumbum valley a key grape-producing belt have left many fields waterlogged and vines weakened.
Farmers say that the once-vibrant ‘Panneer’ grapes, known for their rich flavor and sheen, have lost their market appeal. Prices that once stood at ₹70 per kg have now crashed to ₹40 or even lower. Finer-quality black grapes fetch ₹40 a kg, while those with faded skin sell for as little as ₹20–₹25.
The drop in temperature has slowed ripening and reduced demand. With seedless grapes from Maharashtra entering Tamil Nadu markets, growers fear another dip in prices in the coming weeks. Apart from weather woes, fruit bats have worsened the losses by damaging ripe clusters.
Horticulture officials have confirmed localized crop damage across Uthamapalayam, Chinnamanur, and Cumbum blocks, estimating losses on several acres. The region’s 1,700 hectares of grape cultivation have also been affected by water releases from the Mullaiperiyar dam after heavy rains along the Western Ghats.
Authorities have advised grape farmers in Theni to adopt anti-bird nets and other protective measures under government subsidy schemes to prevent future losses but many worry recovery may take much longer this season.
