Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Governor of Odisha and President of the Indian Red Cross Society, State Branch, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, has called for intensified awareness campaigns on the importance of blood donation, especially among youth in higher educational institutions.
Chairing the Executive Committee meeting of the Society at the New Abhishek Hall of Raj Bhavan today, the Governor urged colleges and universities to organize two to three blood donation camps annually during major events. He emphasized motivating students to actively participate, highlighting that blood donation is a life-saving act that every young person should embrace.
“Misconceptions about blood donation still persist in society. Comprehensive awareness efforts can help dispel these myths,” the Governor said, while also reviewing the status of thalassemia and sickle cell cases in the state. He stressed ensuring easy blood availability for patients and noted that low hemoglobin levels among women and girls remain a key reason for their low participation in donation drives.
Expressing concern over the rise in vision problems among schoolchildren, the Governor urged prompt measures to address this growing health challenge.
During the meeting, a PowerPoint presentation on the activities of the State Red Cross Branch was showcased. The Governor also directed officials to submit timely financial reports. Odisha ministers Nityananda Gond (School & Mass Education, ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare, Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities) and Dr. Mukesh Mahaling (Health & Family Welfare, Parliamentary Affairs, Electronics & IT) addressed the gathering.
