Cairo: Egypt’s Intelligence Chief Hassan Mahmoud Rashad met Palestinian Vice-President Hussein al-Sheikh in Cairo to push forward efforts related to the Gaza ceasefire implementation, media reported.
The meeting, attended by Palestinian Intelligence Chief Majed Faraj, saw both sides reaffirm their commitment to “support and continue implementing the ceasefire agreement” and reject any Israeli annexation of Palestinian land, Al-Qahera News TV reported.
Cairo is also hosting talks among Palestinian factions to build consensus
“within the framework of the second phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan,” the report added.
Egypt is intensifying coordination with the US to ensure the Gaza ceasefire implementation holds and to promote long-term stability and peace in the region.
Rashad also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel earlier this week to discuss advancing Trump’s peace plan and strengthening ties between the two countries, according to Netanyahu’s office.
The ceasefire, which went into effect on October 10 after two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, came through mediation by the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, Xinhua reported. The implementation of the Gaza ceasefire is crucial to maintain this peace.
Despite the ceasefire, violence continues in Gaza. Authorities reported at least 89 people killed and 317 wounded since October 11. Gaza’s health authorities said the Israeli military campaign since October 7, 2023, killed 68,280 Palestinians and injured 170,375.
Cairo’s latest meetings form part of its ongoing push for Gaza ceasefire implementation, to prevent unilateral Israeli moves on occupied Palestinian lands, and prepare for a broader international conference on Gaza reconstruction set for November. Egypt aims to promote stability, recovery, and advance the peace process in the region.
