Bhubaneswar, Odisha : In a landmark judgment, the Ganjam POCSO case, involving the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a minor girl, reached its conclusion today. The court sentenced the accused, Mamu Kalia Nahak, to life imprisonment (for natural life) and imposed a fine of ₹25,000, along with directing ₹5 lakh compensation to the victim’s family.
The tragic incident occurred on April 25, 2025, in Khalingi village under Patpur police station, Ganjam district, where the 4-year-old girl was abducted, assaulted, and murdered. The accused disposed of the child’s body in an under-construction shed.
Following the complaint, the Odisha Police promptly launched an investigation. Evidence collected, including forensic and DNA analysis, and statements from 20 witnesses enabled the police to file the charge sheet within 50 days. The accused was convicted within 121 days of the incident.
The court, following Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act guidelines, handed down a life sentence and fine, emphasizing strict action against heinous crimes targeting women and children. The compensation aims to assist the victim’s family in recovery.
Odisha Police’s timely investigation, professional expertise, and use of modern forensic techniques ensured swift justice. Ganjam SP Shubhendu Patra, under whose supervision Inspector Deepti Ranjan Behera conducted the investigation, led the team to a successful conviction.
State Director General of Police, Shri Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, has directed officials to continue the use of advanced scientific methods in handling cases against women and children, ensuring that perpetrators face the full force of the law promptly.
