New Delhi: Security forces neutralised four militants of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Tuesday. The encounter took place in Khanpi village, around 80 km west of Churachandpur, during an intelligence-based operation.
Officials said UKNA cadres opened unprovoked fire on an Army column early on November 4, prompting a swift counteraction. In the fierce exchange of fire, four insurgents from the non-Suspension of Operations (non-SoO) group were killed. Security forces continue to comb nearby areas to track any remaining militants.
Recent UKNA attacks, including the killing of a village chief and threats to locals, have heightened tensions in the region. Army and Assam Rifles personnel intensified their operations to protect civilians and maintain peace in Manipur.
From October 25 to November 1, the Army and Assam Rifles, working with Manipur Police, carried out several coordinated intelligence-led operations across Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Khuga, Keibul, Kakching, and Imphal districts. These efforts led to the arrest of 17 insurgents and the recovery of 16 weapons, including an INSAS LMG, rifles, grenades, and a 51mm mortar shell.
Forces also seized 4.7 kg of methamphetamine, heroin, and over 14,000 cigarette packets, along with other contraband. Officials said these actions demonstrate the determination of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles to restore peace and stability in the state.
The UKNA and the newly formed CKMA groups have remained outside the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement signed with the government in 2008.
