Imphal: Security forces recovered foreign rifles in Manipur after killing four armed cadres of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in Churachandpur district. The fierce encounter took place in the Khanpi-Henglep region. This occurred during a well-planned intelligence-based operation.
After the gunfight, the troops searched the area and seized several foreign rifles in Manipur. These included an AK-56, MA4 MK II rifle, a 7.62 mm self-loading rifle, an under-barrel grenade launcher, and three single-barrel rifles. They also found bulletproof jackets, tactical vests, and Motorola communication sets. Other warlike equipment was also seized.
Officials said the forces launched the operation after UKNA militants increased extortion and violence in the region. The group had recently killed a village chief. They also demanded money ranging from ₹5 to ₹50 lakh from civilians, schools, and financial institutions.
When the forces asked the armed cadres to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate fire, injuring three personnel. The troops retaliated strongly and neutralized all four militants. Later, they discovered and destroyed a UKNA camp, recovering more weapons and gear.
The United Kuki National Army, a banned outfit not part of the 2008 Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, has long threatened peace in Manipur’s hill districts through violence and extortion.
Officials emphasized that this successful operation demonstrates the firm resolve of the security forces. Their goal is to protect civilians and maintain peace in Manipur.
