Mysuru (Karnataka): In a shocking incident, a farmer was killed in a tiger attack in Karnataka‘s Mysuru, triggering panic among villagers and renewing outrage over frequent wildlife attacks in the region.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday at Haleheggodilu village in Saragur taluk. The deceased, 58-year-old Danda Naika, also known as Swamy, was on his way to his farm in the Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary area when the tiger attacked him.
Forest officials confirmed that the tiger ate parts of the victim’s head and thigh. Villagers said Danda Naika had earlier survived an elephant attack just eight months ago. This latest tragedy marks the third tiger-related death in the region in recent months, alarming both locals and forest authorities.
The growing number of cases of Farmer killed in tiger attack in Karnataka’s Mysuru has angered rural communities. Residents recalled another attack on October 26, when Rajashekara (54) lost his life near Mulluru village. They blamed the forest officials for ignoring tiger movement warnings and failing to install protective cages in time.
Tensions escalated further when, on October 27, villagers gheraoed Karnataka Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar Khandre during his visit to the mortuary of a previous victim. They accused the government of negligence and demanded stronger safety measures.
Farmer activists have now warned that if officials continue to ignore their demands, they will file legal cases for inaction. “We can’t live in fear every day. Farmers deserve protection too,” said one local activist.
Responding to public anger, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, a native of Mysuru, announced that he will soon hold a high-level meeting with ministers and forest officials to address the increasing human-wildlife conflict. He also promised strict action against illegal resorts operating near forest areas, which locals say disturb tiger habitats.
