New Delhi : Following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun preparations for the 2025 Vice Presidential election. On Thursday, the Commission released a crucial update, announcing that the final list of the Electoral College has been officially compiled.
The ECI has finalized the Electoral College that will elect the next Vice President of India. As per the update shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Commission has structured the list in alphabetical order, arranged state/UT-wise, and included all eligible members.
This Electoral College comprises:
- Elected members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha
- Elected MLAs from State Legislative Assemblies
- Elected representatives from Union Territories (where applicable)
Notably, the Vice President is elected solely by the members of Parliament, unlike the President who is elected by both MPs and MLAs. However, the Electoral College for documentation includes all elected representatives for reference and procedural transparency.
Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was serving as the 14th Vice President of India, tendered his resignation on July 21, citing health-related concerns. Just two days after his resignation, the Election Commission swung into action, initiating the groundwork for a smooth and timely election.
As per the Indian Constitution, any vacancy in the office of the Vice President whether due to resignation, expiration of term, or unforeseen emergencies must be filled without delay through a proper electoral process.
With the final Electoral College list now ready, the official schedule for nominations, polling, and results is expected to be announced shortly. Political circles are already abuzz with speculation over potential candidates from both the ruling coalition and opposition blocs.
Stay tuned for further updates as the nation gears up to elect its 15th Vice President.
