New Delhi : The Election Commission of India workshop today brought together Media and Communication Officers from the Chief Electoral Officers’ (CEO) offices of all 36 States and Union Territories at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The workshop aimed to educate and train media officers at the respective CEO offices to deliver the poll panel’s message effectively to the electorate and help them distinguish between political narratives and factual information.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
The workshop assumes significance ahead of the poll season, as the communication space faces challenges from fake news, misinformation campaigns, and AI-generated content. With elections scheduled in Bihar by the end of 2025 and crucial states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam going to polls next year, the electoral arena remains highly active.
The Congress party’s ‘vote chori’ allegations and other attacks on the poll panel have heightened the urgency for clear communication. The workshop forms part of the EC’s broader strategy to counter misinformation campaigns, curb motivated narratives, and promote voter awareness.
The Commission is also developing effective communication strategies to disseminate accurate information and counter false narratives across multiple channels, including social media. Empowering its media and communication wing ensures the poll body can tackle negative propaganda efficiently.
The EC has consistently recognized the media’s crucial role in facilitating smooth electoral processes in a digitized world. Transparent and fair reporting helps voters trust the system while empowering them to separate facts from narratives.
