New Delhi : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday interacted with participants of the 3rd Global South Young Diplomats Forum (GSYDF) and reaffirmed India’s commitment to articulate, assert, and amplify the voice of the Global South.
In a post shared on X, EAM Jaishankar said, “Delighted to interact with participants of the 3rd Global South Young Diplomats Forum. Spoke about the sentiment and solidarity driving forward the Global South agenda. And India’s steadfast commitment to articulate, assert, and amplify the voice of the Global South.”
The 3rd edition of GSYDF was inaugurated on Monday by Ambassador Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South) at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS). Forty-two diplomats from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Eurasia, and Oceania are participating in the two-week programme.
During the inaugural session, Ambassador Malhotra highlighted the background, priorities, and institutional growth of GSYDF since its inception. Dean (SSIFS) Ambassador Raj Srivastava elaborated on India’s foreign policy principles, discussed Competency-based Training at the institute, and explained the relevance of international relations theories in understanding Global South dynamics. He also outlined the overall programme design and wished participants a fruitful stay in India.
Earlier in August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s global initiatives—Mission LiFE, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, International Solar Alliance, and Global Biofuels Alliance—focus on promoting the interests of the Global South.
In an interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, PM Modi stated, “The global community has committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. To live up to this commitment, the Global South must be prioritised. The pandemic, conflicts, and supply chain disruptions have severely impacted the Global South, affecting climate, food, energy, debt, and financial stability, all of which influence development priorities.”
He added, “As a Global South member, India understands these challenges and has made significant efforts to bring them to the forefront of the global agenda. Our G20 Presidency included the African Union and amplified the aspirations of the Global South. Similarly, in BRICS, we actively work to benefit the Global South.”
