Kolkata, (Special Story) : THE DHAKI, musicians who play the dhak drums made of cowhide and wood with decorations of Kas flowers, bring life to Dhakis Durga Puja Kolkata, creating an unforgettable festive atmosphere. These Dhakis travel from different parts of West Bengal, including Bankura, Midnapore, Malda, and Mushidabad, to perform at the Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata.

They board local trains and journey for hours to reach the city. At Sealdah station, the Dhakis proudly showcase their drumming skills while waiting for Puja committees to hire them. As soon as the committee members arrive, the Dhakis strike the dhak, and its echo spreads far and wide, announcing the arrival of the Mother Goddess to passengers and passersby.
After negotiating their fees, they proceed to the puja pandal and spend the festival days performing. They play not only during rituals but also while welcoming visitors and guests. The Puja Pandals and locals shower them with old and new clothes, gifts, and money, in addition to their agreed fees.
During these four days, the Dhakis integrate with the Para or community and become part of the family. The pandal decorations impress visitors, but the Dhakis’ music also plays a key role in judging the pandal’s grandeur. Each morning, their dhak playing awakens devotees for pushpanjali, and the rhythm sets the tone for the entire day. People gather, and the beats generate excitement and anticipation.
As the festival ends, devotees feel sadness bidding farewell to the Dhakis, who continue visiting each house, playing their dhak, and receiving parting gifts. The beats carry a hopeful message: “asche bochor abar hobe” — NEXT YEAR IT WILL AGAIN HAPPEN.
The Dhakis’ energetic performances, dedication, and interaction with devotees enhance the Durga Puja experience while keeping centuries-old traditions alive. Their music unites communities, inspires the young, and reminds everyone of the cultural richness of the festival. Indeed, the Dhakis make Durga Puja in Kolkata a celebration that resonates far beyond the pandal, leaving lasting memories in the hearts of all who experience it.
