New Delhi : Health experts have reported a rise in throat infections, flu, and dengue in Delhi following incessant rains, high humidity, and waterlogging in several areas.
“Seasonal diseases such as influenza and vector-borne diseases like dengue are trending this season due to high transmission. Most cases are self-limiting and do not require hospitalisation or medication,” said Dr. Harshal R Salve, Additional Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS.
Dr. Rishikesh Desai, an Internal Medicine specialist, noted, “Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in dengue cases. Common symptoms include fever, joint pains, body aches, rashes, and sometimes bleeding.” He added that stagnant water contributes to mosquito breeding, increasing the risk of dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported 499 dengue cases in 2025 so far, along with 235 malaria and 37 chikungunya cases. These figures are higher than the same period in 2024, which recorded 481 dengue, 210 malaria, and 29 chikungunya cases.
Desai highlighted that fluctuating temperatures and high humidity are also contributing to throat infections, with patients reporting sore throats, nasal congestion, and fever. Other common symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, loose motions, vomiting, and dehydration.
Preventive measures include maintaining cough hygiene, wearing surgical masks, washing hands frequently, staying hydrated, and consulting a doctor if symptoms appear. Dr. Salve also advised avoiding stagnant water, keeping surroundings clean, using mosquito repellents during the day, and wearing full-sleeved clothing.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging citizens to adopt preventive steps to curb the spread of seasonal illnesses.
