Cuttack, Odisha : A major mishap was reported at Cuttack Railway Station on Wednesday evening when the roof of the old structure at Platform No. 1 collapsed, damaging nearly 500 square meters of area. Parts of the upper shed also fell onto the railway tracks, triggering panic among passengers and causing delays in train operations.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as a large section of the old roof came crashing down without warning. Passengers waiting on the platform were visibly frightened as debris scattered across the platform and adjoining tracks.
Railway police officials present at the station immediately cordoned off the affected area and confirmed that the roof was an old structure undergoing dismantling work. “The roof was already under demolition, and barricades had been placed to restrict passenger movement. Despite precautions, a portion suddenly caved in,” a railway police officer told the media.
Rescue teams quickly arrived at the site, ensuring that passengers were evacuated from the danger zone. The Additional Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) informed that one person sustained minor injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Train movement was temporarily affected as workers cleared debris from the tracks. Several trains experienced delays, though railway officials assured that services are being restored gradually.
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of aging railway infrastructure across the state. Passengers and local commuters have urged the authorities to speed up modernization work at Cuttack station to prevent such accidents in the future.
