Koraput, Odisha | August 15, 2025 – On the eve of Independence Day, political tensions flared in Odisha’s Koraput district when Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati was attacked during a torch rally.
The rally, organized by the Koraput District Congress, began near Gundicha Temple and concluded at the Bus Stand area. Senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Ramachandra Kadam, along with several party workers, joined Bahinipati in the procession.
As the rally reached the bus stand, a man identified as Krishna Chandra Kuldeep, a daily wage worker at the bus stand, allegedly assaulted the legislator. Eyewitnesses immediately overpowered Kuldeep and handed him over to the Town Police Station.
According to an FIR lodged by Bahinipati’s PSO, the accused slapped the MLA, hurled abuses, and issued death threats. On the other hand, Kuldeep filed a counter-FIR, alleging that Bahinipati and his brother had conspired to kill him.
Police confirmed that Kuldeep was taken into custody and subjected to a medical examination. He is currently undergoing treatment at Koraput Hospital and is likely to be produced before court soon.
The case is under investigation at the Town Police Station. Neither the Congress MLA nor the accused has issued an official statement so far.
