Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday chaired a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan to assess the law and order situation in Odisha. The CM directed the police to take all necessary steps to ensure that every citizen feels safe and secure, while reiterating the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on crimes against women.
Speaking at the meeting, CM Mohan Majhi instructed the police force to remain in “action mode” at all times, with senior officers conducting regular monitoring of women’s safety cases. “Public safety must be visible, consistent, and uncompromising,” he said, adding that strict enforcement is essential for building public confidence.
The CM ordered increased police patrolling across the state, especially in and around schools and colleges, to protect students. He also advised traffic police to ensure better road discipline and smooth vehicular movement in busy urban areas.
Highlighting the growing threat of narcotics, the CM directed police to take firm steps against the smuggling of brown sugar from neighbouring states. He called for an intensified crackdown on illegal ganja cultivation and drug peddling, noting that the operation should be expanded and made more aggressive.
Reviewing ongoing search efforts, Majhi expressed satisfaction that in the past year alone, Odisha Police rescued 8,035 women and 3,306 girls who had been reported missing. He stressed that such operations must continue without delay or compromise.
Addressing manpower shortages, the CM announced the formation of an independent Police Recruitment Board to fill vacant posts swiftly, ensuring adequate personnel strength across the force.
The meeting was informed that overall crime rates in Odisha have declined over the past year, with notable progress in curbing illegal arms trade, sand smuggling, and executing pending non-bailable warrants. Majhi praised the police for maintaining control over the state’s law and order situation despite challenges.
Those present at the meeting included Advisor to CM Prakash Mishra, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Satyabrata Sahu, DGP Y.B. Khurania, Principal Secretary to CM Shashwat Mishra, and senior police officers.
