Washington : The Charlie Kirk murder shocked the nation after leading conservative commentator and activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at a university event in Utah. Kirk delivered remarks at Utah Valley University (UVU) on Wednesday when gunfire erupted, sparking panic among attendees.

Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. A graphic video circulating on social media shows Kirk answering an audience question on mass shootings moments before the attack.

A university spokesperson told The New York Times that the attacker fired from a building nearly 200 yards (180 metres) away. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that authorities apprehended a suspect.

In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump mourned his ally: “The great, and even legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially me. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife, Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Trump also ordered all American flags across the nation to fly at half-mast in Kirk’s honor.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the country’s leading conservative student organization. He launched the Arizona-based group in 2012 at age 18 and grew it into a political powerhouse with over 800 chapters across US colleges.

TPUSA mobilized young conservative voters, particularly in the 2024 election, boosting Trump’s re-election campaign. Kirk, a trusted member of Trump’s inner circle, also acted as a political ally and personal friend of the Trump family, frequently appearing at the White House and vetting candidates for key positions in Trump’s second administration.

Earlier this year, Kirk traveled with Donald Trump Jr. to Greenland to rally support for the US acquisition of the Danish territory. He regularly appeared in the media, delivering fiery speeches, running social media campaigns, and influencing Gen Z and millennial conservatives. Admirers hailed him as a “bridge” between grassroots youth activism and the Republican establishment.

Investigators continue probing the shooting, and authorities expect to release more details as the investigation unfolds.
