Jharsuguda, Odisha : The Biju Mahila Janata Dal (BMJD) has raised serious concern over the alarming rise in crimes against women in Odisha. On Wednesday, a delegation of BMJD leaders submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP) through the Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police, demanding immediate intervention and strict measures to ensure women’s safety across the state.
The delegation, led by BMJD Jharsuguda unit president Rojalin Patel, highlighted disturbing incidents that reflect the deteriorating safety of women. Among them was the tragic case of a college student from Baleshwar, who on July 12 allegedly set herself on fire after enduring harassment and inadequate police protection.
The memorandum also cited multiple cases of rape, sexual exploitation in schools, and the gang rape of a tribal girl in Keonjhar, underscoring systemic lapses in law enforcement and victim protection.
According to the BMJD, Odisha has been witnessing a worrying surge in gender-based violence, with nearly 100 rape cases reported daily and over 20,000 women missing within just nine months. Leaders warned that the situation, if left unchecked, would erode public faith in law enforcement.
Prominent BMJD leaders including Jharsuguda Muncipality Chairperson Rani Hati and Zilla Parishad Chairperson Tulabati Minz and female party members were part of the delegation that called upon the state police to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women, ensure stricter law enforcement, and provide robust support systems for survivors.
Speaking after the submission, BMJD members reiterated their commitment to continue fighting for women’s safety and justice across Odisha.
