Jharsuguda, Odisha : Members of the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) and Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) staged a protest in front of the Superintendent of Police office in Jharsuguda, alleging gross failure of the government and police administration in ensuring women’s safety across Odisha.
Led by former Jharsuguda MLA Deepali Das, hundreds of party workers participated in the demonstration. They submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP), demanding immediate steps to strengthen law and order, particularly in safeguarding women.
Speaking at the protest, Deepali Das said, “From villages to cities, from beaches to hostel campuses, women no longer feel safe in Odisha. Incidents of rape, assault, and even murder of women and young girls are on the rise. The government and police have failed miserably, and women are now afraid to step out of their homes.”
The protest also highlighted recent cases of violence against women in districts like Balasore, Gopalpur, and Balanga .The BJD-affiliated youth and student leaders accused the state administration of negligence, emphasizing the urgent need for stronger enforcement and protection mechanisms.
The protestors called for enhanced patrolling, faster judicial action in crimes against women, and improved security infrastructure in educational institutions and public spaces.
The memorandum sent to the DGP outlines specific demands, including:
- Deployment of special women safety squads
- 24/7 helpline support with active monitoring
- Strict accountability of police officers in handling women-related cases
The protest concluded with slogans urging the government to “Act Now” and “Protect Our Daughters.”
