Bhubaneswar, Odisha : The PwD rights awareness program at BJB College in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, engaged students in understanding the legal protections, government schemes, and inclusive practices under the RPwD Act 2016, aiming to foster a more accessible and equitable society for persons with disabilities.
The program was inaugurated by the Disability Commissioner, who highlighted the significance of respecting the rights of PwD in society and encouraged students to actively participate in building an inclusive environment. He stressed that the law guarantees equal opportunities in education, employment, and civic life for PwD, urging colleges to adopt policies that facilitate accessibility and equality.
Supported by the Higher Education Department of Odisha, the awareness initiative covered five regional colleges across the state. Through collaboration with local college administrations, students were introduced to the provisions of the RPwD Act 2016, the challenges faced by PwD, and various government schemes designed to empower them. The program emphasized practical ways students can assist PwD both within and outside educational institutions.
Participating colleges included Sambalpur Government College, DAV College Koraput, Shashi Bhushan Women’s College Berhampur, Kuntala Kumari Sabat Women’s College Baleshwar, and BJB College Bhubaneswar. Each college engaged students in quizzes and group discussions, fostering an interactive and inclusive learning environment. Over 100 students participated in the sessions, gaining practical insights into supporting and advocating for PwD rights.
The quiz competition at BJB College concluded with winners receiving trophies, cash prizes, and certificates of participation. Students actively discussed how inclusive practices in education and community life can enhance the dignity and opportunities of persons with disabilities. The event also highlighted the role of students as future citizens in promoting equality and supporting marginalized groups.
The program’s success demonstrated the effectiveness of combining awareness initiatives with student participation to create lasting social impact. District Social Security officials and education department representatives appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and encouraged other institutions to replicate similar programs.
Overall, the awareness program on PwD rights served as a model for inclusive education and community engagement in Odisha. It reinforced the importance of understanding legal rights, promoting equal participation, and fostering empathy among the youth, ensuring a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities.
