Balipatna, Odisha : A shocking incident of domestic violence has emerged from Balipatna in Odisha, where a young man, Jyoti Mathia, died after sustaining severe burn injuries. The victim, who had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, succumbed to his injuries early Friday.
According to police reports, Jyoti’s statement was recorded before his death. In his testimony, he alleged that his father and younger brother poured petrol on him and set him on fire following a long-standing family dispute over property. Based on his dying declaration, Balipatna Police have taken both accused into custody for questioning.
The incident occurred on Thursday in the Balipatna police station area. Locals rushed to rescue Jyoti after the attack and admitted him first to Balipatna Hospital, then shifted him to Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, due to his critical condition. With 80–90% of his body burnt, doctors referred him to AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Burn Ward. Despite efforts, he could not survive.
Police sources confirmed that Jyoti’s health condition was extremely critical when he was admitted. His dying declaration, recorded in the presence of medical staff, has become the key piece of evidence in the case. The victim reportedly stated that continuous quarrels within the family, particularly related to property disputes, led to the extreme act of violence by his father and younger brother.
Balipatna Police have launched an investigation into the case and are interrogating the two accused. Officials said legal action will be initiated once the inquiry is complete.
