Indian Test Skipper Shubman Gill Scripts History in Manchester Test

New Delhi : Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill has etched his name into the history books with a phenomenal performance in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. Displaying extraordinary consistency and composure, Gill emerged as a standout performer, winning hearts with his elegant stroke play and calculated aggression.

In a series marked by challenging pitches and hostile English conditions, Gill maintained relentless pressure on English bowlers, registering impressive scores across nearly every match. The defining moment, however, came during the Manchester Test, where he achieved a remarkable milestone — becoming the first Asian batter and Indian captain to score over 700 runs in a single Test series in England.

By scoring over 700 runs in the series, Shubman Gill has joined an elite club of only eight captains in the world to achieve this feat. Other legendary names in this rare group include Sir Don Bradman (twice), Greg Chappell, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Graham Gooch, and Graeme Smith.

Third Indian to Reach the 700-Run Mark :

Gill now stands as only the third Indian batter to score 700+ runs in a single Test series, after Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Gavaskar scored 774 runs against the West Indies in 1971 and repeated the heroics with 732 runs in the 1978–79 home series against the same opponent. Jaiswal had earlier set the tone in 2024 with 712 runs against England.

The young captain’s series highlight came in the Edgbaston Test, where he played a monumental innings of 269 runs, powering India to victory in the second Test. In the final Test at Manchester, he followed it up with a gritty 103, further solidifying his reputation as a top-tier Test batter.

Despite Gill’s historic run tally and inspirational leadership, Team India fell short, losing the series 1–2. His brief lapse in the fourth Test — getting dismissed for just 12 runs in the first innings proved costly in a tightly contested match.
